Let me start by introducing myself, and tell you how Bake My
Day evolved. My name is Joan Mitchell. When I was about 15 years
old, my mother saw that I had a passion for art. With a family
of seven, I think she realized she could save a lot of money
on decorated cakes for the many occasions that came with raising
a family. She began ordering Wilton cake decorating supplies
and got me started.
Out of high school, my life took me in another direction, and
I left Green Bay for a couple of years. Upon moving back, a
job hunt brought me back to cake decorating. I worked
at Port City Bakery (formerly Baker Boy, owned by Sure Way Stores).
We provided birthday cakes for over 20 stores in the Green Bay
area for over 20 years. Port City's direction turned to pizza
crusts and my cake decorating days there were coming to an end.
I realized that if I was going to continue, I was going to have
to
strike out on my own.
I had no formal business education, but with many supervisory
duties at Port City, I felt I had enough background to make
it work. With that, and a great degree of confidence in my ability
and stamina, in 1999 I became "Bake My Day".
